Gonville South is an established residential area, with some industry along the riverbank, and a hospital in the north-east. Gonville South is bounded by Alma Road in the north, Carlton Avenue in the east, the Whanganui River and the suburb of Balgownie in the south, and Heads Road and Abbot Street in the west. Gonville South is named for the southern part of Gonville, which is named after Gonville Saunders, the son of an early land holder in the area.
Settlement of the area dates from the mid 1800s, although population was minimal until the 1870s. Rapid growth took place during the late 1800s and early 1900s, aided by the opening of the hospital and the nearby freezing works. Expansion continued between the 1940s and 1960s. The population and dwelling stock were relatively stable from the mid 1990s.
Major features of the area include Wanganui Hospital, Gonville Swimming Pool and one school.
