Wellington Central is a mixed use area, with commercial, entertainment and increasing residential land uses due to redevelopment. This small area encompasses most of the suburb of Wellington Central, and small parts of Kelburn and Te Aro. Wellington Central is bounded by Bowen Street and Whitmore Street in the north, Customhouse Quay, Jervois Quay and a line running continuous of Harris Street in the east, Lambton Harbour, Taranaki Street, Wakefield Street, Victoria Street, Bond Street, Willis Street, Boulcott Street, O'Reily Avenue, Allenby Terrace, The Terrace and Salamanca Road in the south, and Kelburn Park, Boulcott Street, Clifton Terrace, Aurora Terrace, Bolton Street and the Wellington Urban Motorway in the west.
Colonial settlement of the area dates from 1840. Land was reclaimed following an earthquake in 1855. Population was minimal until the 1870s. Development took place from the 1880s into the 1920s, spurred by commercial and industrial growth and improved access. Gentrification and renovation took place from the late 1970s. Rapid growth continued from the 1990s, with the population almost trebling between 1996 and 2006, a result of large numbers of new dwellings being added to the area, particularly medium and high density housing.
