Oriental Bay

Introduction and key statistics

Oriental Bay is an established residential area. This small area encompasses most of the suburb of Oriental Bay, and a small part of Mt Victoria. Oriental Bay is bounded by the harbour in the north, the Town Belt in the east, Palliser Road, Moeller Street, McFarlane Street and Roxburgh Street in the south, and Oriental Parade and the suburb of Te Aro in the west.

Colonial settlement of the area dates from the 1840s, with land used mainly for farming. Population was minimal until the 1880s. Growth took place from the late 1800s into the early 1900s. Expansion continued from the 1970s. Gentrification and redevelopment took place from the 1980s, with high-rise apartment blocks replacing many colonial houses. The population increased slightly between 2001 and 2006, a result of new dwellings being added to the area.
