Northland

Introduction and key statistics

Northland is an established residential area. This area encompasses most of the suburb of Northland, and a small part of Wilton. Northland is bounded by Worcester Street, Cheshire Street, Pembroke Road and Huntingdon Street in the north, Stellin Memorial Park and the suburb of Thorndon in the east, Glenmore Street, Upland Road, Glenmore Street and Northland Tunnel Road in the south, and Chaytor Street, Northland Tunnel Road, Curtis Street and Wilton Road in the west.

Colonial settlement of the area dates from the 1840s, with land used mainly for farming and timber-getting. Population was minimal until the early 1900s when land was subdivided. The population increased slightly between 2001 and 2006, a result of new dwellings being added to the area.
