Mt Cook is an innercity residential suburb with a number of educational facilities. This small area encompasses most of the suburb of Mt Cook, and small parts of Brooklyn and Newtown. Mt Cook is bounded by Webb Street, Taranaki Street, Buckle Street and Ellice Street in the north, Dufferin Street, Rugby Street, the suburb of Newtown, Hospital Road, Adelaide Road and John Street in the east, Hutchison Road and the suburbs of Vogeltown and Brooklyn in the south, and Bell Road, Brooklyn Road and Willis Street in the west.
Colonial settlement of the area dates from the 1840s, with land used mainly for farming and market gardening. Population was minimal until the 1870s. Significant development took place from the 1880s into the 1920s. The population increased substantially between 1996 and 2006, a result of new dwellings being added to the area, particularly medium and high density housing.
