Colonial settlement of the area dates from the 1850s, with land used mainly for dairy farming. Population was minimal until the late 1800s. Significant development did not occur until the post-war years, with rapid growth from the 1950s. The population increased marginally between 2001 and 2006, a result of new dwellings being added to the area.
