Kilbirnie

Introduction and key statistics

Kilbirnie is an established residential area. This small area encompasses most of the suburb of Kilbirnie, and small parts of Hataitai, Lyall Bay, Melrose and Rongotai. Kilbirnie is bounded by Wellington Road, Cobham Drive and Wellington Harbour in the north, Jean Batten Street, Rongotai Road, Salek Street and Coutts Street in the east, Endeavour Street, Queens Drive, Regal Gardens, Imperial Terrace, Rodrigo Road and Manchester Street in the south, and the suburb of Newtown and Crawford Road in the west.

Colonial settlement of the area dates from the 1840s, with land used mainly for farming. Growth took place from the 1870s into the early 1900s, particularly during the 1920s. The population increased between 2001 and 2006, a result of new dwellings being added to the area, particularly medium density housing.
