Introduction and key statistics

Kelburn is an established residential and educational area. This small area encompasses most of the suburb of Kelburn, and small parts of Aro Valley and Wellington Central. Kelburn is bounded by Glenmore Street, Tinakori Road and Bowen Street in the north, the Wellington Urban Motorway, Bolton Street, Aurora Terrace, Clifton Terrace, Kelburn Park, McKenzie Terrace and Victoria University in the east, Fairlie Terrace, Adams Terrace, Polhill Gully Recreation Reserve, Norway Street, Raroa Road, Norna Crescent and Moana Road in the south, and Waiapu Road and Glenmore Street in the west.

Colonial settlement of the area dates from the early 1840s, with land used largely for farming and timber-getting. Population was minimal the early 1900s, with growth spurred by the opening of the University and the improved access brought about by the opening of the cable car line. The population increased slightly between 2001 and 2006, a result of new dwellings being added to the area.
