Khandallah - Kaiwharawhara is a predominantly residential area, with some reserves in the north-west, and some industrial and commercial land use. This small area encompasses most of the suburbs of Khandallah and Kaiwharawhara, and small parts of Ngaio, Ngauranga and Pipitea. Khandallah - Kaiwharawhara is bounded by the locality of Ohariu, the suburb of Broadmeadows and Burma Road in the north, the suburb of Ngauranga in the east, Wellington Harbour and the suburb of Pipitea in the south, and the railway line, the suburb of Ngaio, Cockayne Road, Bankot Crescent, Mysore Street, Swansea Street, Ngatoto Street, Amapur Drive, Malda Grove, Kandy Crescent, Fox Street and the suburb of Ngaio in the west.
Colonial settlement of the area dates from the 1840s, with land used mainly for farming. Population was minimal until the 1880s, with growth through to the early 1900s. Expansion continued from the 1960s. The population increased slightly between 1996 and 2006, a result of new dwellings being added to the area.
