Johnsonville

Introduction and key statistics

Johnsonville is a predominantly residential area, with some commercial land use. This area encompasses most of the suburb of Johnsonville, and small parts of Ohariu and Paparangi. Johnsonville is bounded by Ohariu Valley Road, Ohariu Road, Cunliffe Street and the suburb of Churton Park in the north, the Johnsonville-Porirua Motorway, Petherick Crescent and the suburbs of Paparangi and Newlands in the east, the suburb of Ngauranga, Fraser Avenue, Burma Road and the suburb of Broadmeadows in the south, and generally by the locality of Ohariu in the west.

Colonial settlement of the area dates from the 1840s, with land used mainly for timber-getting and farming. Population was minimal until the 1880s when the railway line opened, with Johnsonville developing as a service centre to the surrounding farming area. Growth took place during the interwar period, aided by improved access. Significant development occurred from the 1950s into the 1970s. The population increased between 1996 and 2006, a result of new dwellings being added to the area.
